The Otis R. Heldman

  Scholar - Athlete Award and $4,000 Scholarship

 Definition:  This award and scholarship is given to an S.H.S. college-bound, graduating senior who has successfully balanced the demands of both academics and athletics and who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in both areas over four years.  He or she will embody the Greek philosopher Thales’ ideal of “A sound mind in a sound body.”  This person can articulate the different but complementary values and lessons learned in the classroom and in the athletic arena.

 Purpose:  To recognize an individual achievement of four years and to provide an incentive to 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students to pursue opportunities not previously imagined 

 Specific Requirements

The SHS graduating senior:

1.       Has achieved a minimum 3.7 GPA in college preparatory courses

2.       Has achieved election in National Honor Society

3.       Has achieved at least two varsity letters in a sport sanctioned by the OHSAA

4.      Has completed a Heldman Scholar- Athlete Award and Scholarship Application

5.      Has submitted a Personal Statement on how his or her experiences in academics and athletics has prepared him or her for success in college and in life

6.      Has requested three recommendations by a SHS teacher, a varsity coach, and a teammate

7.       Has been accepted to, and will attend, a residential liberal arts college or university in Ohio, or an excellent engineering school, or select public universities outside Ohio.

 Note:  This award and scholarship need not be given every year.
